SMC Celebrate 31 Years in Business

A little history on Smc Mini Mix Limited

In 1989 Gary Williams worked for a concrete company called Steetley and Richard Timmis worked for another concrete company called Tudor Griffiths. Gary and Richard could see there was a gap in the Shropshire market for a mini-mix supplier that was not being serviced by any other concrete company. They both made a very bold step into the unknown and gave up their jobs and on 1st November 1990 SMC was born.

SMC was based in a quarry just outside Telford and continued to run from there for the next 18 months. There was one self-loading truck (which meant that a batching plant was not necessary) this was soon joined by a second. Our first ever truck was affectionately known a GERTA.

  • In late 1991 SMC moved its base to run from Parrys Yard at Shawbury, now known as Shawbury Industrial Estate which is still its current operating base.
  • In 1992 Paul Morris joined SMC and was office based due to not being old enough to drive HGV’s, Paul had no previous concrete industry knowledge, so it was a case of learning on the job.
  • In 1993 the fleet grew to 3 trucks and a batching plant was installed in Shawbury. Paul took the opportunity offered to him and went from employee to partner.
  • In 1995 the decision to invest in new trucks was made and three new mixers were purchased from Hymix in Telford, this was when the blue and yellow check drums were born and can still be seen on the trucks today. In 1997 another new truck was purchased.

Then came the recession.  Work was extremely sparse, yet SMC battled through and slowly immerged fully intact on the other side.

In 2001 another truck was purchased and slowly things began to grow once again. Over the next 6 years Smc Mini Mix invested into a fleet of vehicles. With total now of 8 trucks. From 2007 -2011 recession hit again and things were very tight, so SMC knuckled down and weathered the storm again. In 2011 things began to start moving once again and another mixer was purchased to join the growing fleet.

Investment continued into more vehicles. One of SMC’s greatest strengths is providing a reliable service which gives us a first class reputation in the construction industry. Having reliable trucks assists us with producing a reliable proficient service with professional friendly drivers who turn up on time.

Over the following years further investments were made in new lorries and the fleet steadily growing each year . Today  it stands at 10 trucks , the newest being purchased this  March 2021.

In 2019 Richard made the decision to leave SMC and focus on new ventures and explore new business opportunities which he is still running today.

A new era began in March 2021 as Paul joins Gary to become the new directors of  SMC . A team of eight professional drivers support our part time drivers along with an excellent Accounts manager and marketing staff to all bring together the service that SMC are so proud to deliver today.

Why are our customers Loyal to SMC?

We have numerous loyal customers that appreciate the time and effort we put into providing a first class service. We pride ourselves on having a good team of drivers that follow on our ethos of the customer being the most important part of our business.

Time keeping, product quality and attitude are the three factors that we all strive to deliver to all our customers no matter how big or small the job at hand . We are renowned for  going  out of our way to help any one of them.

We are not a company that has been designed to be the cheapest. We haul in all our basic materials so the base cost of our product is high from the onset . The realism is that the consituaiton of our mix gives our customers quality. Quality products delivered on time comes as standard .

Having a cheaper supplier that you may be sitting around half a day waiting for is not cost effective, the money that has been saved on concrete has been more than blown on the labour costs of the men on site that are waiting or on the delay of the job on site.

SMC take a pride and put in so much effort to deliver a good quality product on time. Service can never be undervalued and that is what we strive to instil in all our staff.

Over the years the marketplace has changed and I feel the success of SMC is down to the fact that companies and domestic customers truly do appreciate good service . Budgets have become tighter and deadlines are more crucial to getting the job done properly. Time of the essence and a priority in many developments. Supporting local is also key especially when you know you can rely on your local service provider time and time again.

SMC has made limited modifications through the decades to its business model and have never faltered from its main focus of….

CUTOMER….SERVICE….CUSTOMER….PRODUCT….CUSTOMER.

Thank you to all of loyal customers and welcome to all our new customers to the world of Smc Mini Mix Limted.
